Heartbeat of the Drum

Heartbeat of the Drum

SteppingStone Theatre

SteppingStone Theatre moved into its new venue in December of last year; it's a renovated onetime church next to William Mitchell Law School, now a (we hope) permanent home for the company's ambitious programming for children. Heartbeat of the Drum is written by Sara Dejoras and based on her book; it tells the story of Kiriko and her love for Yoshi, the greatest Taiko drummer around. A great shark threatens Kiriko's village, and in order to save it, she has to get down and learn the almighty rhythms of the Taiko drum (an all-purpose remedy). Ochen Kaylan provides the music, lending this Japanese folktale a percussive heartbeat writ large.
Saturdays, Sundays, 2 p.m.; Fridays, 7 p.m.; Tuesdays-Thursdays, 10 a.m. & noon. Starts: March 1. Continues through March 30, 2008
