Sweeney Todd

I was tempted to write something about the peculiarity of British culture, what with its kicking up both Sweeney Todd and Jack the Ripper into the realms of the literal and the imaginative, until I remembered where I was born and bred (insert cable TV serial-killer documentary here). Anyway, in case you've never seen it onstage (or seen the recent Tim Burton-directed movie adaptation starring Johnny Depp), Sweeney Todd features tunes by the legendary Stephen Sondheim, and tells the story of a 19th-century London barber driven nuts after a cruel judge robs him of his wife and child. He proceeds to follow his muse and go on a murder spree that involves ample helpings of carnage and meat pies. This production snagged Tony awards in New York in 2006, and five performers from that show have packed their bags for this tour.
