Hugh Masekela & the Chissa All-Stars

An international star since his massive, slyly intoxicating 1968 hit "Grazing in the Grass," trumpeter/flugelhornist Hugh Masekela has spent his lengthy, wide-ranging career negotiating the connections between the sounds of his native South Africa and Western jazz, pop, and R&B. Among the early innovators who connected bop and mbaqanga, Masekela has roamed far afield at times. But the core of his music is still the bracing township melodies and bustling rhythms of his native soil, which he joyously celebrates with every note. After his return to South Africa following the demise of apartheid, Masekela started his own label, Chissa Records. Several Chissa artists are along on Masekela's current tour, collaborating with his regular band. The Chissa All-Stars include jazz keyboardist Khaya Mahlangu and an assortment of singers, including Sibongile Khumalo and Nathi Gcabashe. $50 at 7:00 p.m.; $35 at 9:00 p.m.
