The Meeting

The theatrical stage is a prime place to sort out life's deepest complexities, and there were few stories deeper and more resonant in the previous century than those of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. The Meeting, by Jeffrey Stetson, pairs the two; Martin believes peace begets justice, while Malcolm believes justice comes before peace. In this imagined encounter, featuring Terry Bellamy as Malcolm and Darien Johnson as Dr. King, the question is raised: In an unjust society, does one make a fist or bring one's hands together in prayer? Monday's opening night features remarks by Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minnesota), J.D. Steele performing civil rights songs after the show, and a reception in the lobby gallery with art by Twin Cities high school students responding to the legacies of the two great men this show is about.
