Dakota Dave Hull

By Rick Mason

Longtime stalwart of the local, West Bank-centered folkie community, guitarist Dave Hull celebrates that world in a sense with a pair of new albums (on his own Arabica label) that coincide with but won't necessarily be the focus of this gig. An ace flatpicker and fingerstylist, Hull has made a fine career of quietly dazzling readings of his originals and wryly arranged fare that includes vintage jazz, folk, blues, Western swing, and ancient pop tunes from the horse-and-buggy era. Time Machine has all that, but often finds Hull playing a supporting role to a fine assortment of local musicians (including erstwhile partner Kari Larson), yielding stellar ensemble play. The other, Airship, is a collaboration between Hull and old pal Pop Wagner, who chips in fiddle, guitar, and lead vocals. With Hull's guitar, abetted by Wagner's instrumental work, providing rich musical contexts, Wagner's dusty cowboy twang renders timeless versions of a wide range of traditional material from the whimsical to the murderous, a few originals and well-known tunes like "Shady Grove" thrown in for good measure. Some of this material likely will surface during this solo gig. What you can count on is colorful garb and nonpareil picking.
