Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation

By Rod Smith

It's impossible to cover the entire spectrum of contemporary native North American art in a single group exhibition, no matter how massive, which is half of why this 130-artist extravaganza is the second installment of what promises to be an ongoing series. The other half? Luckily for us, the creative explosion that began in the native arts community a couple of decades ago shows no sign of abating. "Changing Hands 2" focuses on works by artists from the West, Northwest, and Pacific, in every medium imaginable, including the Converse All-Stars that provide a canvas (two, actually, identically sized) for Teri Greeve's pictorial beadwork in Khoiye-Goo Mah. While equally Duchampian, David Bradley's corrected butter package, Land O Bucks, Land O Fakes, confronts Whitey's appetite for exploitation head-on, in a manner that recalls the work of Minneapolitan Oscar Arredondo. Preview party is $10, 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Thursday, October 25. Show opens Friday, October 26.
