Architecture in Helsinki
The quirky pop band Architecture in Helsinki originated in Australia. But its members are now reportedly scattered far and wide, a diaspora giddily celebrated in the sunny, pan-global sound of its latest album, Places Like This (Polyvinyl). A feverish mix of chortling horns, steel pan, mbaqanga vocals, skittering electro-funk, calypso, Afro-pop rhythms and guitar, and eccentric song structures, Places comes across as a melting-pot party on the roof of chief architect Cameron Bird's new Brooklyn tenement, with music provided by a pickup band of immigrant residents mingling with the Talking Heads and B-52's. Bird, meanwhile, chirps, growls, howls, and conjures a high-flying falsetto, spewing mostly surrealistic lyrics that do, however, add even more twists to AIH's dense but effervescent textures.
