Carol and Robert Curoe

By Rhena Tantisunthorn

The fact that even after the turn of the century, National Coming Out Week needs to be recognized and practiced in towns, cities, and campuses across the country points to one truth: Coming out is rarely easy. Carol and Robert Curoe have generously documented Carol's coming out to her parents in their book, Are There Closets in Heaven?, which alternates between the father and daughter's perspective in each chapter. This is not a tension-filled, narrative-driven book; the father and daughter duo wrote the book together, after all, so things must turn out okay. Rather, it's a guidebook through the tumultuous waters of a family coming to terms with a daughter's homosexuality. What is perhaps most interesting about their story is that throughout, both father and daughter hold tight to their Catholic faith and church.
