Northstar Storytelling League: Night of the Living Storytellers

By Ward Rubrecht

Published on October 10, 2007

In the classic scary story, "Mr. Fox," the titular character woos a young woman, who finds herself in his house alone and decides to explore. In many versions, just before she opens the last door, a caged bird tells her, "Be bold, be bold, but not too bold, lest your heart's blood run cold." Those bold enough to attend Night of the Living Storytellers are guaranteed a little blood-chilling of their own. Duke Addicks tells stories of American Indians and fur traders and their ghosts, and Maren Hinderlie may thrill with a scary Chinese folk tale about the murder of the moon. A couple of unexpected twists on scary stories are expected as well—Kay Kirscht tells of encountering a ghostly lady-of-the-evening in Portland's Old Merchant Hotel, and Tom Cassidy is a spoken-word artist known for rants on the scariness of our modern world. Later in the evening, the event becomes open to the audience, so you'll have a chance to tell a tale about that haunted apartment you moved out of, or the time you mistook the neighbor's dog for a chupacabra.
