Fashion 47

I saw a sticker on a car recently that said, "Don't change your appearance, change your perception." Hmm. I'm more inclined to Bob Marley's advice: "Lively Up Yourself." For all the legitimate criticisms of objectification and body ideals, there is also the less seamy side to fashion: beautiful surfaces, aesthetic adventure, a sense of constant reinvention. CTC steps into the fray with this work aimed at a teen audience, directed by Diane Paulus. It depicts a reality-TV show in which 47 original participants have been winnowed down to two. Intrigue, betrayals, and machinations follow. It's a show intended as a satire of the fashion world, but done with a knowing gleam and no shortage of affection. Beauty, after all, contains its own version of truth.
