Bahala Na (Let It Go)
Published on October 03, 2007
The audience at last week's Ivey Awards was suitably wowed by the presentation of a solo dance piece from Theater Mu's Circle Around the Island, which was a haunting and achingly evocative meditation on loss and the passage of time. The chance to catch Circle has passed, but there's still a final weekend to take in Mu's Bahala Na (Let It Go). It's a story that spans the 1920s in China to 1990s America, incorporating an elderly woman's memories of life in China and the Philippines as she tries to transform her gay grandson. Mu has a knack for transforming stories about heritage and culture into universal themes. Here, the issue is accepting our loved ones for who they are—always a tricky proposition.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Sept. 14. Continues through Oct. 7, 2007
