Rilo Kiley

By Pat O'Brien

Published on September 12, 2007

Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett must be the only former child actors who have done anything worthwhile, ever. Even cute little Andy from Family Ties is on probation, for chrissakes. Rilo Kiley, however, are a band that keeps getting better the more they branch out and spread themselves thin with side projects (Lewis with the Postal Service and the Watson Twins, Sennett and Jason Boesel with the Elected). It seems like they would burn out with all of the extra work, but each album has been stronger than the last, and it probably helps that everyone's respective "other band" has a sound that is distinct from Rilo Kiley's. Soon enough not every article/sidebar/conversation about them (that includes this one) will reference what the band members once were (Lewis was in Troop Beverly Hills!) and instead will marvel at what they are (Bob Christgau called her a "wet dream for indie boys"!). One thing's for certain: None of them are headed for a court appearance. With Jonathan Rice and Grand Ole Party. 18+.
